EXHIBITIONS AND PERFORMANCES

Tom Hallet

Tom Hallet - draughtsman, sculptor and storyteller - has been guesting the M studio in Cas-co as M-resident for the past five months, creating new work and experimenting. During M-IDZOMER, Hallet will present the work developed during the residency: large-scale drawings, two new sculptures and several flesh-coloured sculptures that enter into dialogue with two prehistoric millstones from M's collection.

Surrounded by the black velvet of hand-applied charcoal on the wall, Hallet takes you into a mysterious, visual universe where mythology, queerness and personal chronicles merge - a challenge that makes you think about we tell ourselves around representation, social constructions and history. The project - which was given the title 'Mare' - is activated daily by a performance by violinist Victor Guaita and dancer Jacob Storer. The performers respond to Hallet's installation using movement and improvisation.

Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa

Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa creates dreamlike works of art taking elements from literature, folklore, magic and childhood memories. His performances, sculptures and installations are rooted in experimental theatre and have a political-activist side. The tragic civil war in Guatemala (1960-1996) is one of the recurring subjects.

The approach of Ramírez-Figueroa is strongly visual. He creates symbolic scenes with a humorous, playful or absurd side. His work explores cultural identity and history, trauma, colonisation and the connection between humans and nature.

Open M

Every two years M gives artists with a Flemish Brabant connection the opportunity to show their work in our museum via Open M. Thirteen out of no less than 370 entries made it to the selection. With this edition, we sound off on the resilience of the arts and on the creativity of artists, which is unstoppable even in difficult times.

The Ten

M worked with ten participants, M’s guinea pigs, on a new collection presentation with artworks carefully selected from the and Cera collection. The entire process was built up as a digital experiment, in the form of a game with multiple episodes. For each episode, points were earned which the guinea pigs had to use to get their favourite works of art into the collection presentation.

The final selection of the participants can be seen in the exhibition.

Don Lario en HYGRA

The two young hip-hoppers and producers Don Lario and HYGRA created a setlist especially for M-IDZOMER inspired by works of art from M's collection presentations. The songs tell the story of those works from their own perspective, sometimes even in Spanish. For this project the BURn Leuven youth centre  and M joined forces to offer young starting musicians a stage.
