A powerful family, with an eye for beauty
The Arenbergs were members of the highest nobility. For more than five centuries they played an important role on the political, military, economic and cultural stage in the Leuven region, in Belgium and in Europe. The exhibition at M tells the story of the Arenbergs, and of their art collection in particular, by means of artworks and objects from home and abroad. Many have never been shown before.
The Arenberg's art collection is now scattered across the world, in museums and in private ownership. For the exhibition a selection of chefs-d'oeuvre from the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna were brought together. You will also have the chance to admire privately-owned works in this one-off reunion of the Arenbergs’ eclectic and prestigious collection. Together the works illustrate aristocratic life down the centuries.
