Christoph Fink (Ghent, °1963) has been working on his Atlas of Movements for many years, exploring the borders of the human body and its interaction with its surroundings. This takes the form of detailed accounts of his travels, photographs, sound recordings, etc. which the artist then turns into experimental exhibitions such as space-filling cartographic and acoustic constructions consisting of drawings, diagrams, tables and layers of sound. Fink thus presents an alternative world view in which he calls into question the relationship between the various elements around us.
My notation method is a means of bringing a degree of structure or order from which to reflect further; or rather, it allows me to enrich the experience of time and space. Initially I wanted to show my archive in Museum M, but I soon realized that my whole oeuvre is an archive, a sort of poetical databank. So I picked out specific aspects of my work: my analogous visual archive (with some of my 85 000 slides), sources of inspiration, drawings I did as a child, a part of my video archive, sketches, marginal notes, etcetera. I show something of the origin of my work, my passion for space and time, for exploring in-depth our understanding of and views on landscape and man’s place in the scheme of things.
This exhibition is being mounted to commemorate the cartographer Mercator in 2012.
In parallel with and with same passion for the empirical method as Mercator – Mercator through travel accounts and me from my own sensory experience – I am juxtaposing his Palestinian map with my contemporary interpretation of the same geographic area.

The exhibition is being mounted in association with the KU Leuven to mark the anniversary of Mercator’s birth (1512-1594). The Arenberg campus library was drawing on its own collections to show twenty maps dating from the seventeenth century to the present day.
