Carmien Michels is bringing M's new exhibition 'Between Heaven and Earth - Discover The Last Supper by Bouts' to life. Armed with a ready pen and sharp wit, she is giving some of the masterpieces portrayed in the St Peter's Church in Leuven a contemporary twist. Discover how the gruesome torture of Proud Margaret and Dorothea were actually the beginning of something incredibly beautiful.

Saint Erasmus

Not long after that Erasmus has to bid farewell to the sea. While he has long suffered from cramps, he now suffers from unremitting diarrhea,  nausea, vomiting, and all manner of ailments. He is near to death.

There she lies… Saint Dorothy. Beheaded because she wouldn’t marry the pagan governor Apricius of Cappadocia. In the background his army sets out, banners flying. They are off to battle.

Meanwhile there is dissension in heaven. Half of the angels want to take action and put a stop to this barbarism. The other half forbid them to descend because John once reproached God for stinking like mouldy cheese.

Proud Margaret

Just when the robbers are about to leave with their booty, who should come in but the pitiful Margaret, the worst for wear from the old wine. Just look at her eyes while they’re threatening her with a knife.

The Last Supper

Not many people know this, but way back in the 15th century gluten-free diets were already surfacing. Back then a lot of people already suffered from stomach and intestine pains, and listened to health gurus who preached: "Away with bread!"
