Since 2016, head of the Collections Department Marjan Debaene has been working at KU Leuven on a doctorate about Leuven's sculpture production in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Late Gothic iconography is one of M’s important sub-collections. The doctoral study should further deepen and unlock the art historical knowledge on that theme.

The first findings were already presented to the public during the collection presentation ‘Masters of sculpture’ (2017) and the exhibition ‘Borman and Sons’ (2019). When the doctorate is finished, M is planning a large retrospective exhibition.

Marjan Debaene’s research at the KU Leuven is part of the research group Art Sciences, the study centre Illuminare. Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Art and the research centre ARDS for medieval and renaissance sculpture, coordinated by M.

Summer Course for the Study of Arts in Flanders

Every year, the Flemish Art Collection and various museum and academic partners offer a 'Summer Course for the Study of Arts in Flanders'. The next edition will take place from 23 June to 3 July. M put together the programme, and provides guidance for it. The theme: 'Medieval and Renaissance Sculpture'. For 11 days, some fifteen young researchers will be immersed in the latest insights into medieval and Renaissance sculpture. We will do this with a series of lectures, workshops and excursions, with experts from the field. Participants get an exceptional insight into the collections of Flemish and foreign heritage institutions and the research they do.

You can view the programme on the website of the Flemish Art Collection
