M wants to be a museum that welcomes everyone. That is why we actively involve the public in our work. Every two years we put on an exhibition of works of art chosen by people not connected to the museum. Everyone wins. The participants learn something about art and discover new talents. Visitors experience how people who do not work for a museum look at art. We at M get a new, fresh perspective of the museum and our collection.

Boundless hospitality

Our very first participation project took place in 2017: ‘Boundless hospitality’. We made an appeal to interested people with a migration background via the diversity Department of the City of Leuven. In the end, we were able to put together a group with eight people from all over the world. They each chose one contemporary and one old work from our collection in which they felt hospitality. We set up the artworks in a homely, cosy room, behind translucent curtains. The emphasis was on videos in which the participants explained their choices.

Madness

In 2019, a group of ten students went looking for a theme in our collection themselves. They ended up with 'Madness'. They then chose old and contemporary works that they felt related to that topic. In the room, you could watch videos in which the students talk about their own journey and in which they share their personal stories about the selected pieces.

The Ten

In 2021, we put together a group of ten art lovers from different generations and backgrounds. The idea was that, through group discussions, they would select ten works from a selection of thirty (15 old art and 15 contemporary art). Covid, however, made it difficult to get together, so we switched to a new approach: a digital game, in which each participant had to try to keep their favourite work in the selection.

In the final exhibition you can see the ten works that came out on top. The rest of the room is set up as a kind of depot, where you can find the twenty other works. The set-up includes a video about the creation process and a publication in which the participants explain why they chose a particular work.

M's art lab

In 2023, we took the decision to further develop our digital participation programmes. The use of AI, including in education, is especially topical. It thus forms a highly relevant starting point for linking our collection to image creation via artificial intelligence.

‘M’s Art Lab’ is a participatory platform for secondary education. It aims to broaden the outlook of pupils and allow them to interact creatively and critically with images – supported by artificial intelligence (AI). The web environment is accessible to all, but is specifically targeted at education. In this digital experimentation space, you can discover thirty different artworks from M’s collection. You are also invited to create an image yourself, with the help of AI. The co-creations will be showcased in a digital exhibition on the website. This digital educational tool has no end date and is part of the permanent educational offering.
