‘Muze and Art’: M in the children's hospital

The idea behind ‘Muze and Art’, a collaboration between M and UZ Leuven, is to bring sick children into contact with art so that they can enjoy themselves creatively and forget their illness for a while.

In 2019, UZ Leuven opened a brand new children's hospital. It has a Music Room, a bright and spacious art room. There, the children can relax, develop their creativity and be children again rather than mere patients. The project is supported by the Fonds Kunst voor het Kinderziekenhuis. M is a permanent partner.

 

There is often an artist in residence visiting the Muze space - usually an artist who is exhibiting in M at the same time. Nel Aerts was the first one to do this in 2020. She let the patients experiment with textile processing, just as she does in her art practice.

Sick children cannot come to the museum. In order to bring them into contact with art, the Muzeruimte regularly hosts small exhibitions, usually with prints of works from the M collection or from exhibitions at M. Sometimes the children produce their own works, inspired by the art they see. For these exhibitions, M also develops search games and assignments.

 

In the Music Room, there is also a varied offer of workshops, theatre performances and meetings with artists. All with the same goal: letting sick children be children again.
