Contemporary art collection
The contemporary art collection
Our collection of contemporary art includes some 700 works by around 130 artists. It is a taste of Belgian art from the last half a century. It also includes older work by Belgian artists from the period after the Second World War.
For many of these artists, M has an collected several works that illustrate the development and diversity of their oeuvre. Contemporary artists exhibiting at M are invited to be inspired by our collection of contemporary and old art, often with surprising results.
Cera collection
The contemporary art collection consists of three subcollections. The largest is the Cera-collection, with about 600 works by over 100 artists. M has held them on long-term loan since 2011. Cera focuses mainly on emerging and lesser known Belgian artists. M provides advice for purchases.
Cera, one of M’s structural partners
Cera has been one of M’s structural partners since 2011 and we work together intensively, with tangible results.
The Cera cooperative invests in welfare and well-being. Among other things, Cera has a large collection of contemporary Belgian art which it has given on long-term loan to M. We look after this collection, exhibit pieces from it and advise Cera on new purchases.
Cera and M have a shared ambition: both are committed to contemporary art in Belgium. For M, the partnership is an excellent opportunity to showcase art of top quality. Cera can share its important contribution to Belgium's art heritage with a wider audience.
Every two years, M places once of its rooms in the hands of the public for a collection presentation that we let our visitors put together. In the past you could watch 'Boundless hospitality', 'Madness' and 'The Ten'. These projects have all been realised with the support of Cera.
Flemish Community Collection
Every year, the Flemish Community adds works of art by contemporary artists to its collection. These are then given on long-term loan to M and other Flemish museums, such as S.M.A.K., M HKA, Mu.ZEE, FOMU & the Middelheim Museum. This collection was significantly expanded in 2021. In order to support Flemish artists during the pandemic, the Flemish government bought several hundred works in 2021, of which it gave 60 on loan to M.
City of Leuven’s Collection
M also manages the collection of contemporary art of the City of Leuven. In 2021, some 30 works by artists affected by the pandemic were added to that collection. The pandemic meant that emerging talent had less room to create. Thanks to the cooperation between M, the City of Leuven and Ceraand the donations from 271 donors, we were able to support 19 artists. The purchases were shown in the exhibition 'The Constant Glitchnamed after one of the selected works.
