Dance, performance and collection management

This November, M and STUK once again present the multidisciplinary arts festival ‘Playground’ – now in its nineteenth edition. One of the highlights will be a unique production that blends dance, performance and… collection management.

Grace Schwindt’s solo exhibition ‘A History of Touch’ is on view at M until 16 November. It offers a striking example of how a contemporary artist can engage in dialogue with a museum collection. For this project, Schwindt retreated to M’s stores, where she explored the collection of late-medieval ‘Christ on the Cold Stone’ sculptures and watched how Benedicte Dierickx, the store manager, cares for them. This inspired her to create the sculptural work shown in the exhibition, as well as an exceptional performance that will be staged live at M several times during ‘Playground’.

Schwindt visited M in June to prepare for the performance. Together with Benedicte, she compiled an inventory of every action executed in the depot – more than seventy in total. During the performance, this ‘lexicon of movements’ will serve as a framework for two dancers. One of the performers is Mercedes Ferrari, with whom Schwindt rehearsed the piece just a few days after her session with Benedicte.

Below, you’ll find a photo essay of both June sessions. Curious about the end result? We are too! Will you join us for ‘Playground’?
