M-resident Tom Hallet
The M-residency of Tom Hallet

Tom Hallet
M offers Tom Hallet a five-month residency at Cas-co. Hallet (born 1990 in Leuven) has a multidisciplinary practice and mainly creates drawings and sculptures. His work is always nourished by a search for representation and recognition.

Tom Hallet
Hallet focuses on drawing and sculpture, two media which he joins into a constant dialogue with each other and with the spectator. Central to his work are queer themes and dominant narratives of love, identity, violence and loss.
As an artist, Hallet starts from his personal history and experiences. He creates very detailed landscapes – sometimes abstract, sometimes figurative – in which bodies merge with nature. Hallet combines these drawings with fleshly sculptures. These sculptures offer shelter as canopies or allow new life to emerge: plants appear from their earth-filled cracks.

The titles of his work are like letters, dedicated to lovers, queer icons, but also to their aggressors. By hanging them together in the same room, he creates an enclosed safe space in which they can find an opportunity for healing.
Hallet wants his installations to challenge us to think about the stories we tell ourselves about representation, social constructions and history
Fun fact, Tom Hallet has already been a production assistant for M, for Sol Lewitt's exhibition.
Nature represents queerness at its best: non-conforming, transformative and genderless
Presentation
During M-IDZOMER, from 28 to 31.07, Hallet will present the result: large-scale drawings and sculptures that enter into dialogue with two prehistoric millstones from M's collection. In a visual universe where mythology, queerness and personal chronicles merge, Hallet questions representation, social constructions and history. The presentation is started daily by a performance of violinist Victor Guaita and dancer Jacob Storer.
