In 1870, Tervuren became an artistic hotspot in the region. The Hertenberg, the ducal castle, the hollow ways and the majestic avenues were the ideal backdrop for a new painters’ movement: the Tervuren School. They changed Belgian landscape painting forever.
Into nature
The Sonian Forest, the glorious nature and the picturesque vistas drew landscape painters out of their studios. With their palettes and easels, they headed into the open air, and decisively opted for realism.
You can still visit the landmarks where the painters once set up their easels.

Boulenger, the rising star
Hippolyte Boulenger (1837, Tournai – 1874, Brussels) was the pioneer and most prominent member of the Tervuren School. His personal temperament is clearly present on his canvasses. They exude foreboding, fear and panic, but also joy and passion.
This retrospective exhibition features works by Boulenger, Lucien Frank, Joseph Coosemans, Isidore Verheyden, Guillaume Vogels and other stars of the movement.
Curators: Peter Carpreau, Marjan Debaene and Herman De Vilder
