Judith Van Oeckel’s presentation marks the culmination of her five-month residency at M. In her practice, she explores the tension between dance as a living art form and the need to record, archive, and preserve intangible artistic practices – independent of the physical presence of the body.

Judith Van Oeckel (b. 1998) is a dancer and artist based in Leuven. She graduated from P.A.R.T.S. in 2019 and obtained her master’s degree in Fine Arts at KASK in 2022. She has previously presented her work at Museum Dr. Guislain (Par Hasard, 2023), M Leuven (Playground, 2023), KAAP (Chambres d’O, 2024), 30CC (Young Poets Society, 2024) and Z33 (Modelling Life, 2025). She was previously a resident at A Two Dogs Company (2025).
Chronic migraines radically changed Van Oeckel’s relationship with movement. Coming from a background as a dancer and performance artist, she was compelled to re-evaluate the limits and possibilities of her body. This led her to explore how choreography can be preserved without losing intensity, vulnerability, and physicality.
During her residency, she delved into translating choreographic movements into sculptural and material forms, through which tension and resistance become tangible once again. These works function as silent witnesses to a body that moves, disappears, and continues to resonate.
M supports emerging talent and, through residency work, gives artists the opportunity and space to deepen their artistic research and develop new work. Every year, two artists are selected for the M-residency, who are guests at the M-atelier in Cas-co for five months. They follow an intensive trajectory with substantive, financial and technical guidance, culminating in a presentation in M.
