Three questions for an M-art patron
“M never fails to impress my overseas guests.”
Fred Truyen (65) holds a PhD in Philosophy, is a professor of Cultural Studies at KU Leuven – and, as of recently, is also an M-Patron. “A logical step,” says the engaging professor. “If only because I spend so much time at the museum.”

“M is no more than two hundred metres from my office, a short stroll through one of the most beautiful parts of the city. That’s why I often go there for a cup of coffee, and I also enjoy taking foreign researchers to the museum. They are always deeply impressed, especially by the interplay between the classical and the contemporary. And I’m not just referring to the collection and how it’s presented, but also to the architecture itself. I remember the old Vanderkelen-Mertens Museum, and it’s jaw-dropping to see how it has been transformed into the building you see today. How such openness has been created in such a limited space – it leaves a lasting impression on visitors.”
“My chief area of expertise is the digitization of heritage, including museum collections. Over the years, this has led to a professional relationship with M. Since the coronavirus pandemic, that relationship has only deepened: as museums could no longer reach their audiences, they began offering their collections online more extensively. There’s an interdisciplinary valorisation group, DIGITglam, which supports museums in this endeavour, and which I coordinate.”
Which part of the collection do you prefer?
“I am especially fond of the classical works. Contemporary art speaks to me less, although I must admit that I was charmed by the recent Alicja Kwade exhibition. And by becoming an M-Patron, I hope to familiarize myself more with contemporary art as well.”
“Personally, I have a soft spot for 19th-century painting. A while ago, I digitized a rather large collection of photographs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Those early photographers had a keen eye for the nuances of light, and their acute observational skills are reflected in the painting of that era, particularly in the landscapes of the naturalists and luminists. I love visiting M to marvel at them.”
Is there one artwork that especially moves you?
“Yes: ‘Enfant jouant sur la rive’ [Child Playing on the Bank] – a work by the Belgian painter Evariste Carpentier, currently on display in ‘M’s Collection’. It’s a painting of a girl standing pensively by the water, in a landscape that seems to envelop and protect her. By the way, that beautifully painted landscape already leans slightly towards Impressionism – it is quite softly rendered.”
“This is something completely different, of course, but in ‘Knowledge in Sight’, one of the recent exhibitions marking 600 years of KU Leuven, there was a brilliant display centred around the Leuven Chansonnier – a 15th-century manuscript of polyphonic songs, which you could explore and immerse yourself in at M. This was of such high calibre, both in terms of content and presentation. I witnessed the utter astonishment of many of my international colleagues as they looked and listened.”

What is the best thing about being an M-Patron?
“That’s hard to say, as I’ve only just begun.”
“This is how it went for me: I was an M-Ambassador for a few years. When that programme ended in June, I thought, why not become an M-Patron? Then I’ll have something meaningful to do when I retire in a few years’ time. As an M-Patron, you are able to choose from a highly diverse programme. I am especially looking forward to meeting the other M-Patrons. The planned art trip to Granada appeals to me, as do the visits to private collections.”
“Although the biggest perk, of course, is that you can call yourself a patron in exchange for a relatively modest contribution. And yes, you can quote me on that (laughs).”
