Since several years, the Playground festival has been the best meeting point for performing arts and visual arts. The white cube of an exhibition and the black box of theatre inspire one another more than you would think.
For this sixth edition, STUK collaborates with Museum M again, creating a ‘playground’ of both art houses. Together, we give an even better insight in the world between performing arts and visual arts. Since STUK presents a couple of Turkish artists this year, we chose to collaborate with 0090, an arts festival with direct and indirect references to Turkey.
Playground looks for boundaries in all possible ways, unravels codes and stimulates encounters between different worlds of art. And all for the public to discover.
Jeanine During
Inging
Jeanine Durning’s work takes as its starting point the body as a necessary bridge between thought and language. Inging refers to the present progressive suffix ‘-ing’ in English which indicates continuing action, like singing, jumping, etc. and the on-going development process.
There comes a point when you put a photograph aside and distance yourself from it. This act espouses a great deal: the gesture of placing an ephemeral image of us in the world. What does it mean to take an image out of the darkness and place it in the light?
Practical training in thinking. In dialoog met Gertjan Van Gennip
Practical Training in Thinking whisks us away into a realm of thought centred on the friction between abstract and concrete and possible and real. Can we get to grips with abstract thoughts if we imagine that they take place in a person, in his head or soul?
Out of Grace, In dialogue with the permanent collection of M-Museum Leuven
Choreographer Lynda Gaudreau’s work was shown at Klapstuk in Leuven in 1993, 1995 and 1997. M has invited her to adapt her most recent project Out of Grace - a light-hearted and dynamic cross between dance, choreography and exhibition - to the museum’s historic collection.
The central point of Helvet Underground is an old-fashioned clock in typical Black Forest style. When activated, two traditional folklore figures appear from the monumental clock. Wearing a costume made of tulle, they silently perform set dance steps, as if they were dolls. French duo Clédat & Petitpierre's oeuvre is situated between live performance and visual arts.
Wendelien Van Oldenborgh takes historic events with a view to examining social conditions. Set in Rio de Janeiro, her new film stages an encounter between actor and politician Bete Mendes (1949) and musician Deise Tigrona (1979). The women talk about their experience of performing and their role as public figures.
